The IRS audits a small share of returns each year, but it can happen to anyone, particularly if you claim significant business expenses, have a complicated return or have a higher income.

Most audits are handled by mail: the IRS sends a letter asking for more information or an explanation. The rest are conducted in person. In either case it is usually a mistake to respond on your own, even if you know the tax law well. The auditor may be friendly, but the auditor works for the IRS and not for you.
